Amelie shook her head no, looking very serious despite the brown chocolate icing smeared across her chubby cheeks.

“It’s a place where mommies and daddies go to sleep sometimes when they need a break,” he explained. His radio garbled again, but he ignored it.

“Like nap time,” he added, still watching Mina, who was shaking her head at him.

Amelie looked at her, her brows furrowed. “Mama, nap!” she said, reaching out to pat her on the head.

“I know of a real good one in Chinatown,” Matthew said.

Mina glared at him. Was he seriously implying they go to a hotel? Like she was some sort of mistress? In front of Amelie, no less?

“I don’t need a nap, honey,” she told Amelie, which was actually a lie. She was pretty tired and could use a nap at any given moment of any given day, but when you were a mom, naps were pretty im- possible to attain, even when she tried to coordinate it with Alma’s. By the time she could get her brain to stop turning, Amelie would be up from her own nap, wanting something; either that, or once she had finally managed to fall asleep or get close to it, the dog would see someone parking in front of the house and start hollering. Someone always wanted something from her, that was the problem. Too much wanting. Her own and other people’s.

She cleared her throat. “And if I did, I could sleep at my own house.”

“Is that right?” Matthew said. “Because you’ve told me several times now that you can’t.”

Mina couldn’t argue with that. She had told him about her trouble sleeping, not that she had needed to, considering how often she’d texted him during his overnight shift while Dima had been away.

He stood up and pushed a napkin in her direction with some writing on it. The Oasis, tomorrow at 12, it said. He crumpled up the paper his sandwich had come in and threw it into the wastebasket behind them. “Kobe!” he said nonchalantly.

Mina didn’t get it. How could he be so cool and collected when their lives were falling apart? Did he really think they weren’t in any danger? His confidence was truly startling. She had the sudden and obvious realization that Matthew was nothing like her husband, and that she had no idea where this ordeal would lead them. That, by kissing him, she had walked herself into a lion’s den.

As he sauntered out the door like he had no cares at all in the world, Amelie, oblivious to it all, looked up at her, blinking.

“Kobe?” she asked.
